Performed in 467 BC, the second surviving tragedy by Aeschylus depicts the siege of Thebes by the enemy from Argos and, above all, the fratricidal fate of Oedipus's sons, Eteocles and Polynices, who are fighting over the throne. Three concentric dramas are played out in the play, which inextricably combines foreign war, war of the sexes, and family quarrel. Racine saw this endless denouement as the "most tragic subject of
